Q: How do you remove the 6 disk CD Changer from the center console in a 1996 Ford Explorer Limited?
I just bought a new deck for my explorer and I would like to remove the old CD changer so I can sell it. How do you remove the 6 disk CD Changer from the center console in a 1996 Ford Explorer Limited?

A: it’s bolted in. just remove the bolts. the wiring actually runs from where the radio is through the console so if you’re wanting to sell the wiring to you will need to remove the entire center console.

Q: What is the easiest way to install aftermarket radio in my ford explorer?
I have a 1997 ford explorer eddie bauer and i want to put an aftermarket sterio in and i know somewhat what im doing but im not familiar with the wiring on the truck. Can someone please help me out with this? What would be the easiest way to get this wired up? The aftermarket sterio is a sony xplod cd deck. thank you

A: You can go to a stereo shop and buy an adaptor so that you do not have to cut any wires, it is an easy plug and play, or just have them install it and they might charge you around 30 bucks.

If you are going to do it yourself (first pull the radio fuse or disconnect the negative battery cable), just cut off the harness for the stock stereo and connect the wires from the new stereo. The usual setup is: 8 wires for the speakers (each has a positive and negative), one constant power, one power when the key is on, one ground, one remote and rca wires for amp. Some also have extra wires for dimmer and power antenna. Its not hard to do, Good luck.

Q: How much could I get for a 1997 Ford Explorer; trading in to a dealership for cash?
As said, my car is a 1997 Ford Explorer. It’s driveable, given it needs some work considering its age. It’s got about 250k on it, good condition. Any ideas?
The sites not working for me. :(

A: A realistic retail price on that truck with the high miles is anywhere from $2000 to $3500 depending on the condition.

Trade in value at a dealership would be half of that…probably between $1000 and $2000.

You are much better off selling that truck yourself on autotrader.com, craigslist.com, ebay.com or your local newspaper. Putting a For Sale sign on the truck would help too.

Q: I am having a problem with my 92 ford explorer stalling out can some one help?
My 92 ford explorer keeps stalling out, I have change the fuel pump, fuel filter, I have also cleaned the MAF sensor, and cleaned the idealar. My question is what else can I do to stop it from stalling out.
Doesn’t matter on weather and as far as the vehicle being hot or cold it doesn’t matter. There is a weird thing though the radio stays on how ever the power steering quits this is all when it stalls.

A: You should check all the vacuum hoses and if not that maybe your fuel injectors might be bad or your fuel pump is going bad or your fuel pressure regulator might also be bad. And dont go to autozone they will tell you to get something you dont need and they dont have obd1 to check it anyways.

Q: What do I need to transfer my 94 Ford Explorer Electric 4wd to manual?
I have a 94 Ford Explorer and when I go off-roading my electronic 4wd doesnt always lock in, and I would like to change it to a manual 4wd. I know I need to get new hubs but is there anything else I need to convert it?
and what is the website to find parts

A: you need hubs and a conversion kit… you can get everything from warren for about 300$

Q: U Haul will not rent a trailer if I use a Ford Explorer. What companies will rent trailers to Ford Explorers?
I just discovered it is U Haul’s policy not to rent trailers if you are attaching them to a Ford Explorer. I have looked for an alternative trailer rental company and cannot find one. I am needing a one-way trailer rental from St. Louis to Nashville. Any help is appreciated!

A: Just rent a truck with a trailer and pull the Explorer!

Q: What is the best type of sub woofer to put in a Ford Explorer?
I have a 1993 Ford Explorer and love rap music with a lot of bass. I have regular speakers but they lack the umph that i want. I was thinking about getting subs and amps? But i have no idea what would be the best route to go on this or the cost of it. If anyone has any ideas, it would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

A: 12″ subs should do the job..since you like that boom you’ll want to put them in a ported or vented enclosure…

the brand is all up to you

Q: How to replace a 2001 ford explorer door lock actuator?
How do you replace a door lock actuator on a 2001 Ford Explorer front driver side. My door will lock, but will not fully unlock when using the keyless entry. When I use my key, it pulls the bracket off of the turn key. It does unlock when I pull the interior handle, so I’m assuming it’s the actuator.

A: by takingb it to an dexpert that handles your type of car problem.

Q: My wife has a 98 Ford Explorer and the drivers wheel is loaded with brake dust; bad caliper?
My wife has a 98 Ford Explorer and the drivers wheel is loaded with brake dust, and the passenger wheel has very little. I really don’t feel any pulling when braking or when driving. I also notice the driver rotor seems to be wearing a bit faster and the psnger side looks like normal wear. So, which calipre is bad, the driver side or passenger. I am thinking the driver side might be sticking just a little bit. I have cleaned all the slides and put brake grease, but still the same results.

A: I somewhat agree with the other answerer.
However, if you’re going to one side, DO THEM BOTH.
All you will do if you do one side, is neglect the other side and the braking will be different.
If you’re going to spend the time and money to do it, do it right the first time and replace ALL the components on one side as you do the other.

ADDED:
Oh…I just had a thought.
Who did the brakes last?
Did they replace one rotor, and not the other?
“China import crap”

Go back and find out what was done BEFORE you had this problem.
Then perhaps you will know what is the cause.

ADDED:
OH MY GOD!!
Don’t use ceramic pads on stock rotors!!!!!!!!
Pads are cheap, rotors are not.
SEMI-METALLIC. Unless you’re racing this truck on the track???

ADDED#3
Ceramic pads are harder than stock rotors and will wear the rotors out faster than the pads.
Unless you upgrade to “racing” rotors, you’ll do more damage than good.

Q: What kind of stereo do I need to purchase for a 1995 Ford Explorer?
I have a 1995 Ford Explorer. I noticed that the stereo is larger than what is typically sold at Wal-Mart. Is there a special type of stereo/CD player that I need to purchase — or are they typically uniform in size/setup? Thanks for the help!

A: Your best bet is to have the staff at a car stereo outlet take a look at the vehicle, and explain what choices you would have for a good installation. Most will do this free of charge.

Q: How much weight Can my ford explorer tow?
i have a 1994 ford explorer 4×4. i want to pull a horse trailer with a horse in it (he weights 1100lbs) how much total can my suv tow? or where would i find that out?
it is a V6 by the way.

A: Call the local Ford dealer for an accurate weight.
Also, it may be displayed on a tag on the edge of the truck door post.

Q: What is the cruise controls beside a steering wheel on a 1999 Ford Explorer called?
I have a 1999 Ford Explorer, and my cruise control pieces on either side of the steering wheel are getting worn out. I want to replace them. What are they called? What’s the easiest way to replace? Sources please. Thanks!

A: New switch pods are available from Ford, & the cost depends on weather your have the stereo controls in the switch pod along with the cruzz. The pods are held into the rubber steering wheel cover by just the rubber itself, no other fasteners. Take a pocket knife, slip it between the pod & the rubber, and slowly pry the pod out. I got new pods for my ‘02 Merc, with the stereo controls in the pod, for about $120 directly from Ford. I replaced the original pods with the new ones in the Ford parking lot.

Q: Can i trade in my Ford Explorer with a broken transmission?
I own a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport and recently the transmission went out on it. No reverse, and is not shifting correctly, pretty much the transmission it screwed. I owe around $4,600 on it and im trying to decide wether to get it fixed or try and trade it in for another car, but im not sure if i even have a value for it since the transmission is broke. So would i get anything for it?

A: yeah owing that much and your transmission is not working i would say you have no trade value a dealer would tack on another 7500 to trade it you would be better fixing the transmission and pay your balance down and then trade

Q: How to get to the spark plugs on 2001 Ford Explorer?
I want to know how to get to one of the spark plugs on the left back of a 2001 ford explorer. I can see it but it’s so close to the compressor I’m wondering if I have to take out the compressor to get to it.

A: Do you have a 4.0L 6 cylinder? If so, some of the plugs can be accessed easier thru the fender well. Remove the front tires, then you can pull off the shield (rubber piece) that lays over the top of the upper control arm. You should be able to get at some of the plugs thru there.

Q: Have a Ford Explorer, need to locate the computer module code to lock/unlock the keyless entry keypad?
I have a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport 2-door and am trying to locate the computer module that contains the 5-digit master code for the keyless entry keypad system – I’ve had so many suggestions but nothing seems to pan out — – any help ?

A: I just bought a 2000 Explorer. It was a 4-door, but what we did was open the panel on the left side of the trunk. On mine there was a box in there (I forget what exactly the box was but it had cords coming out of it) that has a factory sticker on it. You need a flashlight and good eyes, but the keyless entry factory code was on the sticker. The Explorer (the 2000 anyway) can only hold 2 codes. It always has the factory code (from the sticker) and then you can use it to program 1 personal code. When you program your code you will erase the previous personal code.

We learned this from the owner’s manual. There are also Explorer Forums that are full of great information.
