Q: What is a better car, a BMW 3-series, Mercedes C-class, or an Audi A4?
I just got my permit yesterday and drove a BMW 3-series, and I was just wondering what out of the German cars in it’s price range are the best car in general, especially which has a better ride

A: Good question. Here is my personal opinion and experience.
Mercedes: Wonderful comfort, looks awesome, very smooth.
BMW: The 3.0L is designed for performance, handles wonderfully, lots of power, looks awesome.
Audi: V-8 performance, but more weight, looks better as popularity gains, handles nicely

If you want a SMOOTH ride that looks great then Mercedes is great. If you want to leave a Mustang in your dust and still look nice then BMW upper 3 series or M3 is my pick.

Any of the three are great, and their customer service is where the extra $ comes into play.

Q: Which would you pick, Cadillac CTS or a BMW 3 Series?
Me and my wife are getting a new car within the next month or 2, we cant decide on a Cadilac CTS or a BMW 3 Series. Which would you prefer/pick and Why?

A: Cadillac CTS

Q: What is the average mileage on a BMW 3 series motor (2.5 or 3.0 liter) before a full rebuild is necessary?
Am considering buying a 2001 or newer 3-series BMW and am curious how far these cars go on average before the motor (or other components for that matter) needs serious attention. Any references to other sources of information would be appreciated as well.

A: My guess would be around 300,000

Q: Does any 3 series BMW come standard with a turbo?
Does anyone know if the 328i or 335i come standard with a turbo? Called TwinPower Turbo Technology or something along those lines…

So does anyone know if it comes standard? If not, how much more would it cost?

A: Actually the old 335i with bi-turbo and new one with single put out the same power of 306bhp. I know as I own one, also the bi-turbo does 30mpg where the twin scroll single turbo does 28mpg.

All diesels come with turbos as well.

Q: How does a BMW 3-series coupe (‘00 – ‘06) do in snow?
I live in Chicago, and I’m looking at a BMW 325Ci coupe… If i put some quality snow tires on, how would it handle slick, icy roads and small amounts of snow and slush?

A: As long as you have snow tires, you’ll do fine. I have an ‘05 M3, and drove through one of the blizzards we had on the east coast last year with no problem. I was concerned about it when I purchased the car as well, but as was mentioned, the 50/50 weight distribution and traction control do wonders in the snow. Obviously, have a light foot on the gas, and you’ll be ok.

BTW, I purchased my winter wheel/tire package from the dealer – they were actually competitive with tire rack, and they store the set that’s not on the car. I have Dunlop M3s in 17/225/45, and they worked great.

Q: How do you drive a BMW 3 series in sports mode/ manual steptronic.?
I recently have started driving a BMW and I wanted to know the steps neccesary for driving in the steptronic mode. I know I can shift from M1 all the way up to M5 but I don’t know when to shift or what number to shift to. The manual talks about upshifting and downshifting but I’m not sure what upshifting or downshifting is. Also, what is the difference between sport and manual mode?

A: Ok well let’s see if I can help you out. A is for automatic, the transmission shifts like it would in any other car. In S mode, the transmissions shifts you at a higher gear(The higher the RPM’s the more power you’ll have[until around 5800 RPM]), so you can drive more aggressively. M1 through M5 is selecting which gear and when you want to shift. Going off of the principles mentioned before, to save gas shift at around 2800 RPM, to drive quickly and swiftly shift at 5500 RPM. The computer won’t let you do anything dangerous to the transmission(It won’t let you rev to high nor will it let you shift to low).

Hope this helps.

Q: Can an M3 body kit be put onto a regular 3 series BMW?
I have a 325xi and i want to put an M3 body kit on it and was wondering if that was possible. Please post back! thanks!

A: It depends on the year/series as to how easy it is. I’m guessing you have an E46 325xi sedan. The biggest obstacle you face is that BMW never made the E46 M3 as a sedan, so none of the factory parts will fit (at least, not at all easily) since the fenders and more are different between the coupe and sedan.

Instead you’ll have to look to the aftermarket for a kit that gives you the M3 “look”. Unless you know what you’re doing, it’s difficult to get one of those to fit properly so that it truly looks factory, and paying someone to do it is expensive.

If you want an M3 look, better to save your money and get the real thing. That way you get more than the look, you get the mechanical goodies that are what an M-car is really all about.

Q: Will the radio in a BMW 3 Series (E46) automatically turn off if the car crashes?
If the BMW 3 Series (E46) crashes to the severity that the airbags are deployed, will the radio automatically be turned off by the vehicle’s impact detection systems?

I know the car will automatically turn on the hazard warning lights, and that it will also unlock the doors upon impact. (if they were locked) But I don’t know whether or not it will turn off the radio. – Obviously I don’t intend on trying this out for myself, hence the question. :)

Cheers

- Rich

A: most likely yes. BMW provides some of the best passenger safety in the world. If everything else turns off, then the likely hood of the radio turining off is highly probable. Ive also read that during a extremely dangerous impact, it servers the connection with the battery so as to not ignite a spark in case of fuel leakage.

Q: POLL: Which car do you prefer out of, 2003 CTS Cadillac or BMW 3 Series?
I asked this question about a week ago but didnt really get any answers, me and my wife cant decide which one to get, out of the 2 Which would you choose? A 2003 White Diamond CTS Cadillac or 2000 BMW 3 series? And Why?

A: Caddy
it’s a cool car

What upgrades come with the premium package, and what upgrades come with the sport package? Thank you so much!

Sport package comes with sport suspension, sport wheels, sport seats(seats that extend out a bit more), and sport steering wheel(3 spoke) with paddle shifters, if you get automatic.

Q: Will the 2007 328i be replaced by the 330i for 3 series BMW in the future?
In 1999 BMW restyled the 3 Series with the 323 and 328. Two years later in 2001 they increased engine size/horsepower and renamed the models 325 and 330. Will BMW again rename the current 2007 328 model in 2009 with the 330 and increase HP from 230 to 272?

P.S. BMW is already offering a 330 coupe model in Europe with 272 horserpower.

A: There’s been no specific announcement from BMW yet, but the prevailing belief has been that the 328i will be replaced by the 330i. You’ve already seen some movement on this front with the release of the 335i/335Ci twin-turbo. The convertibles will likely change first with the release of the 350Ci. This will leave the 325Ci, 330Ci, 335Ci and 350Ci all in that family, so depending on the sales performance of the turbo, the 335Ci may or may not stay around. The new M3 gets released as well next year and that is supposed to be a V-8, so they will tier the models to provide sufficient distance between that and the standard 3-Series.

If I had to guess, I would say:

1st-half 2007: 328i/330i/335i & 325Ci/330Ci/335Ci
2nd-half 2007-2008: 330i/335i/350i & 325Ci/335Ci/350Ci

Don’t forget that they are finally releasing the 1-series in the US, so for those fuel-minded drivers, the smaller motors (inline 4 & 6) will be available in those cars.

Good luck!

Q: How much are replacement parts for BMW 3 Series models like 316? Wear and Tear items?
I have a BMW 316i (1995) which has done 95k

As i bought it from a trader I got 6 months warranty, but this is for mechanical problems only, not ‘wear and tear’ items (i think that means things like brake pads, suspension etc.

Does anyone have any idea on how much parts cost to replace these so I have a general idea of what to expect if the poop hits the fan?

An indication of associated labour costs would also be great

Thanks!

A: You can use aftermarket parts and get them fitted at any garage or use a friend who is mechanically gifted and bung him a few quid.

Q: How long and how much to install a starter in a 1997 BMW 3 series?
How long and how much to install a starter in a 1997 BMW 3 series. i was looking on youtube and it looked pretty simple. but the mechanic i went to said about 4-5 hours???? which MEANS $$$$$$$

A: that mechanic was only covering his ass… its a fairly simple job and anyone who has any experience replaceing the alternator on your M50 should be able to do it in about 1-2. the price depends on the hourly wage and how much you were charged for the part.

I couldn’t find a DIY article for that particular job so what you found on Youtube should be a good indication of how long and easy the job is

Q: What do I need to replace to when the turn signal light works intermittently for BMW 3 series?
The turn signal light stops working every now and then. I hear the fast tempo ticking and the indicator in the front panel lights up. Every now and then it works again. I know that means it’s not the light bulb. Does anyone know what needs to be replaced? I have a 2002 3-series.

A: Intermittent problems can be extremely difficult to diagnose. In the case of turn signals you can divide it into the bulb, power source, wiring, and turn signal switch.

Remove the lens and the bulb. Inspect the bulb and socket for corrosion and condition of the filament.

Check the fuse that supplies power to the turn signal system. Remove it. Check for corrosion. Visually check the condition and check continuity if you have an ohmmeter.

Inspect the wiring and all connectors. Disconnect each connector and visually inspect. And don’t forget the ground wire and connection.

As a last resort you may be able to remove, disassemble and inspect the contacts in the switch.

But start with the simple stuff first
